Posh make a bright start at Fratton Park: Jimmy Bullard has the first effort before Neale Fenn’s cross causes panic in Portsmouth’s box. The home side manage to get into the game as Nigel Quashie and Arjan de Zeeuw both test Mark Tyler. Quashie then breaks the deadlock, smashing home the rebound after Tyler had blocked Mark Burchill’s shot. Soon after Tony Shields has to be carried off on a stretcher; Posh are reduced to 10 men just before the break as Sagi Burton is sent off after elbowing Svetoslav Todorov. After the break Paul Merson goes close, then Quashie and de Zeeuw have further chances. Linvoy Primus doubles the lead from close range, having been left unmarked in the area. Barry Fry sends Simon Rea up front, but it’s the home side that has further chances to extend the lead: Vincent Péricard misses two great chances just before the final whistle.
