Chairman Darragh MacAnthony finally takes ownership of Posh and the club celebrates by knocking Championship side Southampton out of the League Cup live on Sky Sports. Darren Ferguson keeps an unchanged side and they begin the game brightly. The deadlock is broken when Grzegorz Rasiak puts Dean Keates's inswinging corner past his own keeper. Shwan Jalal tips a free-kick from Rudi Skácel against the post, before George Boyd doubles the lead after Keates's effort was blocked. Aaron Mclean blazes a glorious opportunity over the bar and Posh are made to pay as the ball quickly returns to the other end, and Nathan Dyer delivers a perfect cross for Rasiak to slide into the net. McLean misses a second great opportunity and, just before half-time, Jamie Day stops an effort from Andrew Surman on the line. Youth team player Octavio Maginnis-Castro provides the half-time entertainment with a display of his ball control skills. Posh match the Saints during the second half, with Jalal keeping out Skácel and Bradley Wright-Phillips. George Boyd and McLean miss opportunities to secure victory, but George Burley's team are unable to find an equaliser.
