Posh begin their return to League One in fine style. Aaron Mclean and Craig Mackail-Smith both miss fine opportunities, but it’s the visitors that have the better chances in the first half. Joe Lewis denies first Will Hoskins then Jeff Hughes, who took too long to shoot following Jo Kuffour’s cross. Soon after Kuffour nearly has a chance of his own following Ryan Bennett’s misplaced header, but Kelvin Langmead manages to see the ball out.
After the break Posh begin to dominate, which culminates in Langmead surging into the box and setting up George Boyd for the opener. On 69 minutes Wayne Brown blocks Langmead’s header from Grant McCann’s corner on the line. Soon after McLean beats Mikkel Andersen to the ball and, despite the best efforts of James Tunnicliffe, scores his first goal since February. Substitutes Charlie Lee and Lee Tomlin, who arrived from Rushden & Diamonds yesterday, go close. McCann completes the win minutes from time, curling a free kick in the bottom left-hand corner.
Gary Johnson celebrates on the pitch after the final whistle, and says “I couldn’t have written a better script. I was proud of the players before the game and even prouder of them afterward.”
