First-team coach Tommy Taylor takes over as caretaker manager to become the fourth person in charge of Posh within 12 months. Aaron McLean capitalises on confusion between the Plymouth Argyle defence and keeper, but the lead only lasts 5 minutes when Barry Hayles, who missed the first tie through suspension, squeezes a soft shot past Mark Tyler. David Norris then becomes the second Peterborough-born player to score the winner against Posh in 4 days. Taylor's men perform well, but miss some glorious chances in the last 10 minutes. Being knocked out of the cup, however, may prove to be a blessing, as it leaves the club free to work on the main goal — promotion.
