Before the match Les Parry says that “I want to be a team that’s horrible to play against”. He succeeds, as Tranmere Rovers grab a surprise first win of the season.
Adam McGurk forces Joe Lewis into a save in the opening minutes; a poor backpass from Chris Whelpdale, returning from injury, gifts McGurk a second chance, but he puts his shot across goal. Liam Darville denies Aaron Mclean a shot, then Arron Davies is forces off with a muscle injury. Posh continue to have chances, but Charlie Lee puts his shot over, while Ryan Bennett and George Boyd are denied by the crossbar and Joe Collister. The hosts take the lead just before the break as a mistake by Lee lets in McGurk, who gives Arnaud Mendy a tap in. In the second half Posh are unable to hit the target: first David Hibbert then James Wesolowski fire wide. Grant McCann comes on despite having played in Slovenia last night, and immediately sends a 30-yard free kick inches over the bar. Posh continue to have chances, but the home side hold on for 3 points and a clean sheet.
