The scoreline flatters Posh, who are missing George Boyd through injury. Rock-bottom Walsall have an early chance as Alex Nicholls is sent through by Paul Marshall, but Joe Lewis easily saves. The home keeper has no chance, however, as Nicholls guides home Reuben Reid's cross. Posh have a few efforts, but neither Chris Whelpdale nor Grant McCann can find a way through. Reid blazes over from 6 yards, before Craig Mackail-Smith levels the game, holding off Oliver Lancashire to fire home on the turn. Lee Tomlin runs nearly the length of the pitch in injury time, only to fail to hit the target. In the second half Lewis denies Nicholls and Marshall, then Jonny Brain turns Whelpdale's header round the post. Mackail-Smith scores his second from unmissable range, heading in McCann's cross. Nathaniel Mendez-Laing then scores his first senior goal, beating Brain at the second attempt. Walsall assistant Martin O'Connor is sent off for complaining about the apparent offside. Ryan Bennett then turns Posh's goal difference back in to the positive, poking home McCann's corner. In injury time Lewis completes his man-of-the-match display with a stunning save to turn Jon Macken's shot round the post. Chris Hutchings and O'Connor are sacked the next day.
