Posh fans turn out in force for the first leg, quickly selling out their initial allocation. In the opening minutes Charlie Lee and Joe Lewis collide, and despite clearly struggling the goalkeeper perseveres. The visitors then take the lead: David Martin fails to hold Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s shot and Craig Mackail-Smith makes no mistake. MK Dons soon come close to equalising, as Sam Baldock is inches away from meeting Angelo Balanta’s drilled cross. Posh suffer another blow when Gabriel Zakuani is forced off with a shoulder injury. Mathias Kouo-Doumbé makes a two-footed challenge on Mendez-Laing, but referee Jonathan Moss doesn’t even award a foul.
Lewis is unable to reappear for the second half, and this further disruption sees his replacement Paul Jones have a nightmare start. Within a minute he fails to punch away Tommy Rowe’s awkward header back across the goal, and Daniel Powell stabs the ball home. Sam Baldock then sends a 25-yard free kick through the wall and into the net. The turnaround is completed when Balanta beats Jones at his near post. Posh’s day gets worse as Kelvin Langmead’s sloppy pass results in Lee bringing down Powell for his second card. David Ball goes close with a rare Posh attack; Mark Little is then brought down by Stephen Gleeson just outside the area after a run from the half-way line, but the officials give the penalty and a second red card. Grant McCann converts to keep Posh in the tie.
