Posh return to the Championship with an accomplished opening-day performance. Sean Scannell has the first chance, with Paul Jones happy to concede a corner. Lee Tomlin and Grant McCann have efforts from distance; débutant Nicky Ajose is forced off with a hamstring injury. Scannell opens the scoring, beating Ryan Bennett to the ball and lifting it over Jones. Posh come close to a quick equaliser, as Julián Speroni saves Tommy Rowe’s effort, then David Ball’s follow-up is stopped on the line by Jonathan Parr. In the second half Tomlin twice goes close with headers; on 58 minutes he then sets up McCann for the equaliser with a clever free kick. Darren Ferguson’s side go in search of the winner, which comes as Mark Little’s cross is headed home by David Ball. The match closes with Speroni pushing Ryan Tunnicliffe’s fierce shot around the post. Ferguson is pleased with the points: “It took us far too long to get a victory in our last season at this level so to manage it first time up is really pleasing.”
