Posh narrowly avoid going to penalties in their first competitive meeting with Stevenage. In the opening moments Alan Julian brings down Tommy Rowe in the area, only for the referee to wave play on. Lee Tomlin, and then Lee Frecklington, have efforts saved, but it’s David Ball who opens the scoring with a close-ranger header. The hosts level proceedings against the run of play, however, as Lawrie Wilson bursts forward to set up Stacy Long. Darius Charles begins the second half with a long-range effort; Ball then doubles his tally, taking Tomlin’s cross and finishing in the far corner. Stevenage begin to threaten, with Long being denied by first Paul Jones then Rowe. The score is eventually levelled: Bostwick fires home from 20 yards. In extra time Boyd opens the scoring with a 25-yard free kick against his former side; Ball then narrowly misses his hat trick, denied by Julian at the near post. The hosts, however, manage to come back for the third time, as Chris Beardsley turns Bostwick’s header past Jones. In the dying moments Jon Ashton brings down Boyd in the box, and Tomlin coolly slots the ball past Julian to send the Posh through.
