Southend are unable to cope with in-form Shaquille McDonald. Ted Smith saves his first effort, but it isn’t long until he opens his account, heading home a Matt Carter cross. The hosts slowly begin to get into the game, and Alex Lynch makes a smart save to deny Brandon Scott. McDonald is played through by Jevani Brown, but Smith manages to save with his legs; Jaanai Gordon then heads over from 6-yards out. McDonald doubles his tally just before half time following good work from Tom Conlon. Ricky Duncan’s side improve in the second half: Kane Farrell sends an effort against the bar, then Jason Williams fires narrowly wide. During a goalmouth scramble Daniel Matsuzaka is unable to poke the ball home, and under-15s substitute Norman Wabo goes close to heading in Farrell’s cross. Posh complete their victory in injury time, but only after McDonald sends Brown’s through ball over the bar. He makes amends by controlling Lawlor’s pass with his chest and calming slotting the ball beneath Smith. After the game Duncan says “that was probably the best exhibition of forward play we’ve come up against this season.”
