Rene Howe came through the youth ranks at his local club Bedford Town, appearing for the first-team in 2003/04. The following season he became a regular, showing his goal-scoring prowess. Having missed the first two games of the 2005/06 season through suspension, he quickly scored 5 goals in 3 matches. The goals continued, leading to a trial at Premiership Aston Villa, but an injury put him out for 2 months. Upon his return, Howe continued where he had left off, helping Bedford win promotion to the Conference South through the play-offs. Having been tracked by Northampton Town, MK Dons and Luton Town, 19-year old Howe turned down a new deal at the The New Eyrie to sign a full-time contract at Conference North side Kettering Town.
He was given a chance to cement a first-team place following the surprise release of Zema Abbey in November 2006 and quickly scored 5 as Kettering demolished Clitheroe 10-1 in the FA Trophy. His impressive scoring record continued as he bagged 20 goals in 42 league appearances, including 4 goals against Hyde Utd.
Interest from league clubs naturally continued, and after only one season at Rockingham Road he left to join Posh on a 4-year deal. Having impressed pre-season, he began the season on the bench, only starting twice before the end of October. He claimed the last minute equaliser at Lincoln City as his first goal for the Posh, but the dubious goals committee adjudged Oliver Ryan as having turned the ball into his own net. He scored his only goal of 2007 in the 7-0 demolition of Brentford, and soon into January, following the arrival of Liam Hatch, left for Rochdale on-loan.
